You don’t have to be a baseball fan to recognize what an achievement it is to be selected to the elite group that is the Hall of Fame. It is pretty great to recognize the accomplishments of a resident of Bigfoot Country’s own backyard and feel a bit of pride. Last night Mike Mussina of Montoursville capped his career with word that he will forever be enshrined in Cooperstown. The pitcher retired from the Yankees, of course spent time with the O’s in Baltimore compiling stats and records comparable to the very best. In northcentral PA many remember his time in the mid 80’s pitching for Montoursville High School and as a Little League player before that.

Moose has been back in Montoursville, and is a coach at his alma mater. I met his from time to time over the years. Friendly, quiet and unassuming was also my experience. He signed a ball for my kids once. I told them to hang on to it because he was headed to the HOF someday. They played with it of course, but we still have it. The Williamsport Sun-Gazette reported today the Mike has just wrapped up basketball practice last night when he got the call. The reporter said Mussina and his son quietly grabbed some fast food for dinner before the rest of the baseball world knew the news. I wonder when you’re inducted if you “get fries with that”?

Congrats Moose! – BF
